Context

Retention is always a problem in any business, especially for Gyms. So we built this experimental app to see if we can motivate the Gym members to visit regularly and improve retention.

Problem Statement

"Motivate the Gym members to visit regularly and improve retention."

Habit Formation Strategy

A repetitive loop of Trigger, Action & Reward can turn human behaviour into a habit. The question is, how to reward a member and motivate them to work out regularly?

Habit loop

Trigger

We don't have the tech to track the fitness progress of a user. So we decided to set Attendance as a Trigger metric. Each time user visits the Gym, the app rewards a point.

Action

We built an attendance system using QR codes to capture the members who visit Gym. It works as mentioned below:

1. Every member will have the app with their unique ID.

2. The app will mark attendance when a member scans the smart QR code available in Gym.

Reward

The app will mark attendance when a member scans the smart QR code available in Gym.

Fraud Prevention

As the QR code is easy to copy, we built a robust system to prevent frauds:

1. A member can't scan the QR code more than once in a day.

2. Member can scan the QR code only at the Gym.

3. Each QR expires in 5 seconds to prevent sharing with unattended members.

Fraud errors

Impact

1. Visiting habits

2. Payments

The app won't allow a member to scan if their package is expired. It created a fear of missing points from which motivated users to make payments on time, every time.

3. Retention

Below are the retention rate of Indian Gyms according to IHRSA research

50% retention in average gym 75% retention in high performance gyms 69% monthly retention in Zuva Fitness

What Worked?

1. This App motivated some segments of members to visit regularly.

2. Created a fear of missing points in members who must renew their packages.

3. It gave a sense of achievement for those who redeemed points.

4. Helped us to track the attendance of members.

What Didn't Work?

1. This app didn't affect fitness enthusiasts.

2. It didn't improve the retention in the long-term.

Conclusion

It is difficult to say that the rewards program is the only reason behind our retention rate. Expert trainers, marketing, budget pricing and many other factors are at play which are equally contributing to the success. But this app resulted in some good behavioural changes in the Gym members to help the business grow.
